5 Common AC Problems and How to Fix Them

It can be frustrating when something goes wrong with your air conditioning. It usually happens when you need it the most and the local engineer is fully booked.

The good news is that you can try an industrial air conditioning firm, they are likely to be able to help you resolve the issue. In fact, you should be aware of the 5 most common AC issues as you can probably resolve these yourself!

No Power

This is a surprisingly common problem that is often an issue with your circuit breaker. Check the breaker first to make sure that it is on. There are many reasons why the breaker may have tripped, ranging from an overload on the circuit to a fault with the air conditioner.

If the breaker is fine check the fuse in the air conditioner and then make sure the thermostat is set correctly. It’s the thermostat that tells the air conditioner to turn on.

Frozen Coil

This is a very common problem. The coil freezes when there is insufficient airflow moving across it. It can also happen if the refrigerant level drops too low or the temperature outside is too low.

You’ll see the issue as the airflow coils will be coated in ice. You can melt the ice by setting the unit to run, with the AC turned off.

You’ll then need to clean the coils to remove all dirt and debris, ensuring the best possible airflow.

If it freezes up again you may have low refrigerant:

Leak

A leak means that you’re losing refrigerant. This is the substance that runs through the pipes inside the air conditioner. It removes the warmth from the air, effectively allowing cool air out. If there isn’t enough refrigerant the air can’t be cooled.

You’ll need to find the source of the leak but you won’t be able to top it up without professional help. They can advise whether it’s worth fixing the unit or replacing it.

Smelly Airflow

If you haven’t used your AC for a while and the airflow is smelly then there’s a good chance you have bacteria in the air filter. This is generally the case if the smell is vinegar or urine like. You’ll need to inspect inside the air conditioner. You may have nesting animals, a bad filter, or your unit could have been damaged.

You can look but it is best to get an expert to advise on the repair. If you get the diagnosis wrong you could be putting your health at risk.

Inadequate Cooling

Finally, if your air conditioner is blowing out hot air then you may simply have set the thermostat incorrectly. If this isn’t the case then the air conditioner may not be the right size for your home, meaning that it is struggling to cool the space.

Alternatively, blockages in the airflow or low refrigerant can cause this issue. In these cases, you’ll nee the experts to rectify the situation for you.
