Garden Landscaping 101: A Beginners Guide

If you’ve been staring out onto your yard and telling yourself you should do some landscaping to make the space more enjoyable, you probably haven’t done so yet because you don’t know where to start.

Gardening may seem like a daunting task at first but if you follow the guidelines offered below you can create your own Utopia right in your backyard.

1.Planning

Don’t just start digging and planting right off the bat. Sit down and map out your garden as you would like to see it. You can play around with shapes and forms and zones. It’s easier to make changes and adjustments at this stage than it is to complete your garden and realize it doesn’t work. Keep in mind that you cannot just dig anywhere because of underground water and power lines.

Once you have decided on the layout you can decide on which trees and shrubbery you would like to have in your garden. Do you want to add color, shade or create a windbreak? All these considerations need to be acknowledged so that when you’re done, you are happy with the end result.

2.Reduce Your Options

When you’re landscaping you want to stick to a simple yet eye-catching design. The simpler the better. This simply means you will have to streamline your ideas for the sake of clean execution and staying within your budget.

Do you want your garden to be a place where you can go and sit or have a picnic? Do you want it to be a place where the children can play? Do you want to be able to entertain guests there or is it simply an aesthetic feature? Whatever the function of your garden is going to be will determine how it’s going to look keeping in mind the space you have at your disposal.

3.Location

Study your landscape. Consider what the sun and wind do at different times of the year. You do not want to have your patio on the side of the garden where the sun is so bright you won’t be able to enjoy a nice meal in summer. Consider which direction the wind blows before deciding to erect a fire pit.

If there’s no other way around it then you will have to be creative in the way you use trees to create shade or shrubs as windbreaks. Putting in structures to create shade or windbreaks is also an option you can explore.

4.Materials

Creating a garden landscape is more than just flowerbeds, trees and shrubs. You also need to think about other aesthetic features that are going to create a seamless transition from the inside of your house to the garden.

Using some of the same elements, colors, and materials in your garden as in your home will tie the two zones together and create a cohesive picture. Materials that are most popular at the moment are paving, concrete and timber. Each of these materials adds something different and unique to a landscape.

Paving adds new life to a garden by creating a focal point or adding a pathway. An Illusion of space can be created by choosing the right direction to lay the pavers. Concrete is a strong and durable material and you can add a different nuance to it by adding texture through things like pebbles or glass. Timber is the most popular of the three landscaping materials because it’s so versatile.

5.Get The Right Tools

Now that all the planning is done you need to make sure you have everything you need. The right gardening tools will make your life so much easier. With sites like fastline that provide lawn and garden equipment, there shouldn’t be any excuses to not find the right tools for the job.

Before you buy any equipment, you might want to read reviews of the tools on sites like Mechanopedia. You can compare different models to one another and find equipment that is best suited to you. If you’re going to have a lot of grass, you’ll need string trimmer but how will you know which one you need if you don’t compare different models? To start off you will need the following a shovel, garden spade, trowel, garden hoe, garden rake, watering hose, wheelbarrow, and a leaf blower. Look for leaf blower information online if you’re not certain about what to get.

6.Prepare the Soil

This is the most important step in creating a landscape. Soil that hasn’t been prepared for planting will not promote the growth that you wish to see.Create your own compost to add nutrients to the soil. Try to avoid using commercial fertilizer and potting soil as this has been known to cause the roots of seedlings to burn.
